‘Tis International Talk Like a Pirate Day, mateys! Arrrr!
This pirate-honoring “holiday” was created by John Baur and Mark Summers in 1995, and it has since become a major celebration of the Pastafarians (followers of the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster.) It really gained ground after John Baur and family was featured on an episode of Wife Swap in 2006.
Now, there’s a sentence that I never imagined I would ever write.
Talk Like a Pirate Day is just one of the silliest things I’ve heard of in my life, which is at least one reason why I simply adore it. As usual, however, it snuck up on me and I didn’t have time to give it enough attention for a proper post. But it’s coming, mateys. It’s coming.
Edited to add: Arrr! Republic of Pirates Blog beat me to it!
Until then, go shiver some timbers, or y’know…walk a plank or something. Gosh, that sounds dirty, doesn’t it?
At least be sure to give someone a good ole stink-eyed “Arrrrrr!” today.
And chances are, it will be even more fun if you don’t explain why!
What’s your favorite bit of silliness?
Arrrrrr … how many more days until National Ice Cream Day?
I just checked for you and you just missed it. In fact, according to Wikipedia, in 1984 Ronald Reagan declared the entire month of July as National Ice Cream Month. You get a whole month!
Speaking of ice cream, I thought of you last night when our power went out. After a few hours and there was no sign of the power returning, I thought, “Well, it would be a shame to let that ice cream go to waste…” and so I “rescued” a bowl…:)
Way to go, Leonore! I am very proud of you. It’s a shame to think of the countless pints and gallons of ice cream in your area that were not rescued. *sigh* I need a moment.
Seeing the sentence you never imagined you’d write did a great job of tickling my funny bone. ;)
My son’s assertion I’m a “very pain in the neck” has a similar impact. But overall, I have so many silly things I love, I’m hard pressed to choose only one as my favorite. Hee.
It was a good one, wasn’t it? :) And I might have to borrow your son’s phrase the next time my boyfriend is being a very pain in the ass.
I love that you have too many silly things to choose from. People who can appreciate the silly are truly awesome.
Arrr, well we been spendin’ the whole day yammerin’ like pirates, which is why we done found ourselves sailin’ past yer blog! But we be likin’ yer idea of a special day for chuggin’ ice cream and we’ll be droppin’ anchor here agin on our next voyage ;)
Arrrr, ’tis fine and grand o’ ye lads! I’d be right chuffed to see yees again in these here waters! :)
