There’s not much to tell so far. I’ve had no power since Monday night but no damage or flooding. The roads in my area are mostly clear by now so I have ventured out to find an internet signal.
And that’s all there is to report. All in all, I know I’ve been lucky. Though having no power or water is certainly an inconvenience, it is no more than that. The house is not flooded, there’s no tree in my living room, and no one I know has tragically died. I have wood and a fireplace, food in the pantry and a grill to cook it on. I have warm kittens who like to sleep on my lap while I read a good book and sip at some wine.
Life, for the moment, is fine. A little dimly lit, but just fine.
And so, to celebrate Hallowe’en, I offer what I believe is the finest Hallowe’en film noir I’ve seen in my life thus far. You’ll see at the end how well I can relate to it.
Actually, given that I was also out of power exactly one year ago, it’s even more fitting!
As you can see, I’m making very good use of the limited opportunities for internet access.
Happy Hallowe’en everyone! And to those on the East Coast, I hope you all weathered the storm and are doing well.
I’ve been thinking of you! So glad to hear your Sandy experience has been slightly less dramatic than all I am seeing in the news. Hope the electricity is on soon. We had a bad ice storm 4 years ago that left some of the area without power for a week+. It was very cold so I had people move in with me since we live slightly “off the grid”…if that makes sense. ;) Anyhow, I remember what a mess that was.
Thanks, Annie!
I actually mind winter outages less than summer outages. We’re lucky enough to have a wood-burning stove so heat is not a problem in the winter. In the summer, however, there’s no way to cool the house down without electricity and since we’re on a well, we have to be strict with our water consumption, so sponging off with cool water isn’t really an option either.
We just got power back last night, so we got lucky. {hones are still out, though. My boyfriend’s house won’t be back up until tomorrow (predicted) and others a few days after that. Some areas around me may be a bit longer, but New Jersey definitely got it worse (they usually do!) and some areas are said to be out for 2 weeks.
So glad you’re alright, if damp. I could do with a prolonged and enforced time indoors (though not a hurricane, please) to catch up with all your recent blogs which I’ve only skim-read so far and put aside to enjoy properly later. Not toooo much later, I hope
I must say, the power outage wasn’t all bad. If I were on municipal water and didn’t rely on electricity to pump water from a well, then I honestly wouldn’t have minded a forced slow-down of life. Did you ever see this post I put up on another blog? http://moderndinosaur.wordpress.com/2012/08/16/blackout-2/ (Sorry to add another to the catch-up list ;) )
This is awful! I was only thinking the other day that I hadn’t read any ‘Dinosaur’ posts for ages. I thought I was a follower, but it seems I can’t be , because I find I have a dozen or more posts that I knew nothing about to catch up on. Aaagh. Aaagh.
Sorry to cause you angst! Though it does please me so that you enjoy it enough to want to catch up :)
Glad to hear you’re OK – and thanks for the film!
Both thanks and you’re welcome! (And thanks for sharing it on Twitter!)
Good news you are fine…
The vid is prrrrfect, I also shared it yesterday.
Thanks Maru. That video needs to go as far and wide as possible :)
Good to know you are fine.
This vid is great. I also shared it yesterday.
Have you seen Henri 1-3 as well?
Sorry to have posted the same twice, I thought it had not come through.
Yes I have seen the vids. Love his sense of humor! I also follow him at @HenriLeChatNoir .
Glad you’re okay. The pictures I’m seeing of my home state, and the reports I’m getting from relatives and friends, are making me simultaneously homesick and heartsick.
Yeah, NJ always gets it worse during storms like this. The pictures from the shore are just mind-boggling.
A week later and it is still a mess, Leonore. I am glad your area remained flood and damage free, for the most part. And, I am glad you didn’t have to wait a week to get your power back.
